Alcohol in the Workplace
Workplace Alcohol and Drug Policies
Studies have shown that the abuse of alcohol and drugs in the workplace can cost Canadian workplaces billions of dollars in lost productivity, injuries, absenteeism, medical costs and liability.
One way to address this issue is to adopt a clear and comprehensive Alcohol and Drug Workplace Policy. The goal of a well-written policy should provide access to current and accurate information. This would include substance abuse and all of its affects, methods that outline early detection protocols, and a process to support affected employees and their families to seek out treatment options that meet their specific needs.
The Benefits of an Alcohol and Drug Workplace Policy:
- Employees and management will have a clear understanding of how the organization deals with substance use in the workplace
- Can guide managers and fellow employees on how to deal with an individual with a substance use problem
- Improve workplace health and safety
- Can assist and support employees and/or their families with a substance abuse problem
- Reduce liability
- Reduce workplace injuries related to substance abuse
- Demonstrates a supportive and healthy workplace to its employees
A workplace alcohol policy may be defined as a formal set of principles, guidelines and rules governing the job-related
behavior of directors, employers, employees, contractors, volunteers, agents and others with regard to the use, misuse
and abuse of alcohol. Often it is part of a broader policy covering the use of other psychoactive substances, including
tobacco, illicit drugs, over-the-counter medication and prescription drugs. A workplace is defined as a site where the
consumption of alcohol or other drugs occurs and/or where the negative consequences of consumption are felt.
Workplace alcohol policies generally serve four goals:
* to increase productivity; * to reduce safety risks;
* to improve employee health; and
One of the most important things to remember is to take the time to create a policy that's right for your workplace. Don't just copy or adopt the policy of another company.
Learn from what others have done. But at the same time recognize that successful workplace policies are designed to
meet the needs of individual companies, and conform with their distinct organizational cultures. Ensuring that your policy
is 'tailor made' for your particular workplace will make it easier to communicate its objectives and requirements to
employees, foster compliance, and defend it if challenged.
